White English Labradors, Lighter Shades for a Family Pet
The AKC recognizes three colors of Labrador Retrievers, black, chocolate and yellow. So what is a cream-colored or white English Labrador?
The answer is that a white Labrador, sometimes referred to as cream-colored, is a dog with a hair coat that is so pale that it looks like a white or cream-colored coat. Typically, this dog comes from a family line of yellow Labrador Retrievers. In many Labs that look white, a little bit of cream or yellow is visible around areas like the ears. This is why white Labs that are eligible to be registered with the AKC are normally registered as yellow Labrador Retrievers because the official breed standard defines yellow Labs as ranging “…in color from fox-red to light cream.”
It is important to remember that white Labrador retrievers are not albinos. An albino animal cannot produce pigment in their skin and fur. Most white Labs have pigment that is visible in the skin around their eyes and on their noses. Since white Labs are not albinos, they do not have the health risks or conditions that are often associated with albino animals.
Some Lab breeders specialize in family lines of white Labrador Retrievers with the specific goal of breeding for white coats. These breeders can use either American or English Labradors to start their program. Both American and English Labs have family lines of dogs with pale coats that look white in color. White Labs still have their typically agreeable temperaments and great personalities, which makes Labradors rank number one in popularity in both England and America, whether they are family pets or service dogs.
With white Labs, as with any other color, and whether an English or American Labrador, the bloodline will impact how a dog is built and characteristics such as energy levels. In general, English Labs tend to be a little shorter and broader than American Labs, which are taller and leaner. Most English Labs tend to have quieter personalities and lower energy levels than American Labs—but not always.
There are a few things to consider if you are interested in getting a white Labrador. First of all, is the cost. Because Labs with a white coat are not as common as their black, chocolate, and yellow Labrador cousins, breeders may charge more for Lab puppies with a white coat.
Secondly is grooming. A white Labrador is going to have the same need for exercise and interest in outdoor activities as any other Labrador. Because of their pale coat, dirt and stains will obviously be more visible on a white coat, which might mean more time spent bathing and grooming your new family member to keep their fur sparkling clean.
However, whether you choose to look for a white Labrador, as opposed to a black, chocolate, or yellow puppy, any Labrador will be a great addition to your family. Regardless of its coat color, Labradors are famous for bringing you hours of pleasure and lots of unconditional love.
